Islamabad is already battling al-Qaeda. Now it's facing an insurgency in
Balochistan
That's not going to be easy. The Baloch, a distinct ethnic group spread
over Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, are fiercely independent and have
been a thorn in Islamabad's side for decades regardless of who is in
power. Balochistan is rich in gas and minerals, yet it is Pakistan's
poorest province. BY TIM MCGIRK Time Magazine 20.6.06 |
Balochistan’s accession to Pakistan
The political, economic, social, cultural discrimination and military
operations that Balochistan’s people are facing today are nothing new and
such things have been going on since the very inception of Pakistan. This
discrimination has taken on even more sinister overtones of late, leading
some commentators to warn that a situation seems to be emerging similar to
that which pertained in 1970-71 in respect of East Pakistan, now
Bangladesh. Sheikh Asad Rahman 18.6.06 |
Fresh air strikes in Balochistan
Even six months after President General Pervez Musharraf ordered his Army
and the Air Force to suppress the freedom struggle launched by the Baloch
nationalist elements, the freedom struggle continues to gather strength
with no sign of any impact on the freedom-fighters despite the large-scale
use of heavy weapons and air strikes. Their motivation and determination
to achieve independence remain as strong as ever. by B. Raman 17.6.06 |

Conflict in Balochistan is a costly one
In the remote desert of Balochistan, a war for independence is distracting
Pakistan as it struggles to contain Taliban and al Qaeda militants along
the Afghan border. It is up against an array of Baloch fighters who accuse
it of plundering the hidden riches of the arid southwestern province:
natural gas. But the conflict in Balochistan is also a costly one, feeding
off the deprivation in what is Pakistan's largest and poorest province
despite sitting on the nation's principal gas reserves. "It's not just a
few tribal chiefs against the government. There's a genuine movement of
Baloch nationalists" said Asma Jehangir, chairwoman of the independent
