Opposition stages walkout from Balochistan PA over
"military and police operation"
Leaders express concern over Musharraf’s commentsin favour of Captain Hammad in lady doctor case
The opposition benches in the Balochistan Assembly on Tuesday staged a walkout when the deputy speaker disallowed an adjournment motion moved by the leader of opposition regarding "military operation" in Sui Tehsil of Dera Bugti, police raids in the Marri camp and Killi
Kambrani.
Deputy Speaker Muhammad Aslam Bhootani was in the chair.
Opposition leader Kachkol Ali Baloch of the National Party (NP) said the federal government had deployed heavy military contingents along with helicopter gunships in Sui Tehsil of Dera Bugti district for "military operation". This has caused uncertainty not only in the province but also the country, he remarked.
Speaking on the admissibility of the adjournment motion, Kachkol said the Army deployment in Sui could cause armed confrontation between security forces and the civilians in Sui.
He said the provincial government should have approached nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti for a peaceful solution of the Sui situation. The Sui situation had become an international issue, he said and suggested that tension must be defused through interaction.
The parliamentary leader of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) Haji Juma Khan Bugti said if "fire" erupted in Sui it might engulf the whole country. He suggested that the government should solve the issue as early as possible.
Balochistan National Party (BNP)’s Akbar Mengal, Akhtar Hussain Lango and parliamentary leader of Pashktoonkhawa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Abdul Rahim Ziaratwal also spoke in favour of the adjournment motion.
They expressed their concern over the comment of President Pervez Musharraf in favour of Captain Hammad of the Defence Security Guards (DSG) in Dr Shazia case.
They said the construction of new cantonments would not bring development in Balochistan; rather, it would enhance backwardness because a huge amount of budget has to be allocated for the construction of the cantonments.
Responding, provincial minister of Home and Tribal Affairs Mir Shoaib Nausherwani said from January 7 to 11 more than 800 rockets and mortar shells had been fired, targeting the national installations in Sui. The government had to deploy the security forces in Sui just to protect the national installations there, he added.
In the provincial cabinet meeting, he said, the government had asked the federal government to deploy the security forces only for the security of national installations in Sui, with a condition that there would be no operation there.
The president had several times assured that there would be no military operation in Sui, he added.
He said the interaction between PML’s high command and chief of JWP Akbar Bugti is a sufficient proof that the government had no plan of operation in Sui but wanted to solve all the issues through talks.
In his ruling, deputy speaker Aslam Bhootani said the government had already assured that there would be no operation in Sui and army had to be deployed there for the protection of the national installations. Therefore, the adjournment motion is disallowed, he added.
In protest at the ruling, the opposition benches staged a walkout from the House.
The deputy speaker also disallowed another adjournment motion of the Leader of the Opposition against the police raids in the Marri camp and Killi Kambrani in the absence of the mover. The deputy speaker adjourned the House till Thursday.
