Akhtar Mengal opposes presidential referendum
QUETTA: A former Chief Minister of Balochistan, Sardar Akhtar Mengal strongly opposing the proposed presidential referendum said that his party would boycott such unconstitutional act and mobilize the people on the issue.
Speaking at a Press Conference in which former central leadership of Baloch Students Organization announced to join Balochistan National Party, here on Tuesday, Sardar Mengal said that referendum for the election of president would be unconstitutional, as there was no provision in the constitution in this connection.
He said that if General Mushrraf was interested to remain president then he should conduct free and fare election in the country and contest the presidential election through elected parliament as allowed by the constitution of Pakistan. He said that all the political parties believe in democracy and having democratic culture in their ranks were opposing the referendum. Sardar Mengal said that only kings party and some other groups were in favour of in such unconstitutional act. He said that referendum could be conducted on the issues.
Replying to a question he said that the graduate condition for the National and Provincial assemblies candidates could not supported, as such restriction was not imposed in any country of the world. He said that through such tactic wanted to make parliament hostage. Responding yet another question he said that his party would evolve its strategy for opposing referendum after the announcement of the government programme in this connection. He said that other parties would also be connected on the issue. Earlier, Manzoor Baloch former Chairman BSO and Central Organizer PONM Students Alliance announced to joint Balochistan National Party
(BNP) along-with hundreds his supporters including former members of the central committee and office bearers of
BSO.
He expressed confidence over the leadership of Sradar Ataullah Mengal and said that BNP was the only party which struggling for the due rights of the people of Balochistan. The Acting President of BNP Abdul Wali Kakar and Sardar Akhtar Mengal welcome the new induction in the party and expressed the hope that they would play their role in the struggle for the achievement of rights of the people of Balochistan.
