Two get death sentence for Karachi bombing

A Pakistan court convicted and sentenced to death two tribal militants yesterday for a 2005 car bombing which killed four people near a state-run petroleum company's office, a prosecutor said.

Aziz Khan and Mohammad Mengla, said to be linked to Baloch rebels, were accused in the November 15, 2005 blast near the office of the Pakistan Petroleum Limited, which oversees oil and gas exploration across the country.

Police have said the men belonged to the Balochistan Liberation Army, a guerrilla group which claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Judge Haq Nawaz at the city's anti-terrorism court found the men guilty of involvement in the blast. "They are sentenced to death," said Mazhar Qayyum, a public prosecutor. He provided no further details. Defence lawyer M.R. Syed said the defendants would appeal. 1.6.07
