JSQM alleges victimization

HYDERABAD, Aug 29: The Chairman, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Bashir Khan Qureshi, has said that the excesses against the Sindhi people had crossed all limits.

In a statement, he alleged that on the instance of Punjab, the rights of the Sindhi people were being usurped and the youths were being deprived of all job opportunities.

Mr Qureshi said that the agriculture sector of Sindh was being destroyed, its rich agricultural land was being converted into a desert while that of Punjab were being turned into a green land. He said the Sindhis were not prepared to accept slavery or a stepmotherly treatment.

He called upon the people to join the struggle of the JSQM against Kalabagh dam and the greater Thal canal.

MUET TEACTHERS: The Mehran University Teachers' Association has deplored the alleged harassment and humiliation of teachers by the university vice chancellor on the assessment carried out by the students.

A meeting of the association's general-body here on Wednesday, said that the vice chancellor had been summoning the teachers individually on the pretext of bad performance as evaluated by the students. The house resolved that no teacher summoned by the vice chancellor will comply with his orders unless a proper procedure was followed.

It was decided that the teachers will observe black days from Aug 30 to September 1 against the attitude of the vice chancellor. It was resolved that the office-bearers of the association will apprise the public and the higher authorities of the problems and injustices unleashed against the teachers and the irregularities being committed by the university administration.

In a communication addressed to the vice chancellor, the association maintained that the policy of assessing the performance of the teachers through the students was illegal and unjust as, it said, the chairmen and deans were only competent to assess and evaluate the performance of the teachers through the ACRs.

The association maintained that the policy had never been discussed in the academic council which was the competent statutory body to enforce such decisions.

It argued that the students were incapable to assess the performance of the teachers as they had secured insignificant marks in their pre-entry tests. The association was of the opinion that the exercise was apparently meant to degrade, harass and malign the teachers and to cover-up the weaknesses of the university administration. 29.8.01
