A Baloch journalist reveals he was tortured in prison by Pakistani secret services agencies
Reporters Without Borders today voiced its outrage at torture inflicted on Javid Lehri, of the Urdu-language Daily Azadi during the nine months he was imprisoned in Quetta, Balochistan .
The journalist was snatched by around 20 military intelligence agents from his student hall of residence in Kuzdar district on 29 November 2007 probably for publishing articles that were highly critical of the government.
Speaking for the first time about his ordeal, Lehri said in an interview with the Daily Times, “It took me three months to realise that I was being held in a detention centre close to Quetta. My tiny cell was always completely dark”.
During the first three days of his detention, Lehri was hung by his feet and beaten. His jailers then chained him up and tortured him. “The torture was so unbearable that I prayed for death,” he said in the interview. “I hoped I could find some object in my cell that I could use to commit suicide with”, he admitted.
He was asked where the name Azadi (liberation in Urdu) came from. The journalist said the secret service agents wanted to know “what kind of liberation” his newspaper was fighting for and demanded that the name be changed.
“I told them that I only worked for the newspaper as a correspondent and that I could not change either its name or its editorial line. They wouldn’t believe me and continued to beat me,” he said.
Since his release, on 22 August 2008, Lehri has suffered from insomnia, depression and digestive problems. He has to travel from his home district in Balochistan to Karachi for treatment every two weeks.
“I cannot afford to take the treatment I need. I often have nightmares because I am still receiving threatening phone calls on my mobile phone warning me against talking about what happened to me in prison”, he said.
“The conflict between government forces and separatist movements ravaging Baluchistan has been devastating for the region’s journalists”, the worldwide press freedom organisation said. “This arrest was in fact illegal and constitutes an offence against the rule of law. The terrifying account given by Javid Lehri, who was kidnapped and tortured for political reasons, should prompt the central government to open an early investigation so that those guilty of these vicious acts can be punished,” the organisation added.
Lehri’s account was distressing similar to that of Munir Mengal, who was arrested on the orders of former president, Pervez Musharraf, on 4 April 2006 and held secretly on his orders for 22 months by police and military intelligence for having founded the satellite television Baloch Voice. 24.12.08

Protests at Baloch terror trial, Drop all charges against Marri and Baluch
Stop abusing the anti-terror laws
Human rights campaigners are not terrorists
London - 1 December 2008
On Monday 1 December, the Baloch 'terrorism' trial resumed in London. Friends and supporters of the defendants, Hyrbyair Marri and Faiz Baluch, staged a protest outside the court, calling for the trial to be halted and the charges dropped.
Photos of the protests are available to view and download for publication here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11288615@N00/?saved=1
Although the police and court officials were needlessly bullying, forcing the protesters to leave the court grounds, the supporters of the defendants made their point and were seen by court staff and by everyone who came to the court and who passed by it.
The Balochistan human rights campaigners Hyrbyair Marri and Faiz Baluch are being prosecuted on terrorism charges, which are widely believed to have been concocted by Pakistani intelligence.
Monday's protest was supported by Baloch and Sindhi rights campaigners from Pakistan and by members of CAMPACC, the UK Campaign Against Criminalising Communities, which opposes abuses of the anti-terror laws.
Mr Marri and Mr Baluch are represented in court by two of the UK's leading human rights barristers, Henry Blaxland QC and Dame Helena Kennedy QC.
Mr Marri is a former MP and government minister in the regional assembly of Balochistan - a previously independent state, which was invaded and annexed by Pakistan in 1948, and which has ever since been under illegal Pakistani military occupation. Mr Baluch is his campaign assistant.
"The Pakistan High Commissioner, speaking on behalf of the new democratic government of Pakistan, says his government wants reconciliation in Baluchistan and opposes the prosecution, effectively calling for the charges to be dropped," says human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who helped coordinate Monday's protest.
"The trial is another abuse of the anti-terror laws, whereby legitimate human rights campaigners end up on trial.
"It appears that the UK government has been blackmailed into arresting these men and harassing other Baloch exiles and refugees. It is reported that Pakistan's military and intelligence services have threatened to end all cooperation with the UK government in the "war on terror" unless critics of its war in Balochistan are silenced and jailed. That is probably why Marri and Baluch are on trial.
"The UK authorities seem to have decided these men are expendable for the sake of the 'greater good' of tackling terrorism by maintaining close relations with the Pakistani military and intelligence services.
"Marri and Baluch have campaigned for self-determination for Balochistan and helped expose Pakistan's annexation and oppression of the Baloch nation. They are defending their people against military oppression and economic exploitation. Pakistani military chiefs want them prosecuted because they have been such effective campaigners, exposing to the world Islamabad's tyranny in Balochistan.
"For nine years, the UK's Labour government aided and abetted the illegal dictatorship of Pervez Musharraf, selling him military equipment that was used to prosecute Pakistan's illegal war in Balochistan - a war that has involved the perpetration of war crimes and crimes against humanity and which has been strongly condemned by international human rights groups," said Mr Tatchell.

Selig Harrison shames Americans for arms supplies to Pakistan
By Ahmar Mustikhan,
Freelance Journalist Glowing tributes were paid to Nawabzada Bala'ach Marri at a meeting at Busboys and Poets in Washington DC on Saturday afternoon. The victim's brother Hairbiyar Marri and Faiz Baloch face jail in the U.K. for trying to organize Baluch resistance against military brutalities.
WASHINGTON DC: Glowing tributes were paid to the Shaheed-i-Baluchistan Nawabzada Bala'ach Marri at a meeting in downtown Washington DC Saturday afternoon.
Baluch activist Nabi Baloch, who became close to the Baluch Che Guevra after meeting him in London in 2001, said Marri had shunned worldly comforts to adopt the path of struggle so that the Baluch people could live their life in freedom.
“He could have gotten the chief ministership or the governorship handed to him on a silver platter,” Baloch said at the Busboys and Poets memorial meeting organized by the American Friends of Baluchistan. He said the the slain leader and his father, legendary Baluch leader Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri, had for decades challenged the Pakistan army injustices in Baluchistan.
On th occasion, the A.F.B. demanded a Congressional Fact Finding Mission to Baluchistan.
Selig S. Harrison, Asia Director of the DC-based Center for International Policy, in his message to the American Friends of Baluchistan, said, “Americans should be ashamed that U.S. military equipment supplied to Pakistan in the name of the “war on terror” has been blatantly diverted and misused to inflict widespread human rights atrocities on ethnic minorities fighting for their legitimate rights.”
Harrison, who could not attend the meeting because of his wife's sickness, congratulated the A.F.B. for commemorating Marri's passing, and said the struggle of the Baluch people for their rights in the face of repression bu successive regimes that have been directly, or indirectly, controlled, by the armed forces, deserves the admiration and support of the United States and the international community.
The Baluch in Texas-sized Baluchistan province in southwest Pakistan have repeatedly risen up in arms against the annexation of their land in March 1948—seven and half months after the British left India divided in August 1947.
“Bala'ach Marri personified this struggle with his courageous leadership of Baluch resistance forces against the might of the Musharraf regime's U.S.-supported Army and Air Force,” the U.S. scholar said.
Harrison, in an oblique reference to friction in the Baluch nationalist movement, said to the extent that Baluch leaders are able to cooperate and resolve their internecine factional and personal conflicts, the Baluch movement will merit the respect and support of the international community, adding he will continue his own efforts to help build that support.
Personal rivalry was a major contributing factor in the Baluch losing their statehood in March 1948 and remains a bane of Baluch politics to this day. The De Jure Ruler of Baluchistan, Khan of Kalat Beglar Begi [Prince among Princes] Suleman Khan Ahmedzai appeal for asylum is still pending in a U.K., while Nawabzada Hairbiyar Marri, a brother of the slain leader, faces a terror trial in the U.K. for trying to repulse the Pakistan army. But the two are not on talking terms.
“Bala'ach symbolized a Baluch national movement that has been led with remarkable determination for five decades by his father Khair Bux, Attaullah Mengal and other Baluch patriots. This movement will undoubtedly be broadened and deepened in the years ahead as part of the larger unfinished struggle of all the ethnic minorities to win justice in Pakistan,” Harrison said.
Baluch nationalists say historically they had no truck with Pakistan, as the word itself was coined barely 70 years ago while Baluchistan, or the land of the Baluch, has a history of many centuries. Marri and his father Nawab Marri have long demanded the Baluch right to self determination.
London-based human rights activist Peter Tatchell, in his message, said Baluchistan is where Pakistan is waging a war against the Baluch people – a war that has been condemned for its widespread human rights abuses by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
"For 60 years, Baluchistan has been under military occupation and its people crushed by five bloody wars launched by Islamabad,” Tatchell said. He said Pakistan's illegal war in Baluchistan is a war that has involved the perpetration of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“We remember with pride and honor Bala'ach Marri and all those people who have sacrificed their lives in the cause of justice and freedom. Their courage and ideals live on, in the hearts of all people who seek a better, fairer world,” Tatchell said.
He added, “Freedom for all nations and peoples struggling for their liberation from tyranny. Their victory has been long delayed, but it can not be denied.”
Iqbal Tareen, coordinator of the Forum for Justice and Democracy in Pakistan, recalled the humble beginnings of the Pakistan army and its growth into a virtual empire that dominates all facets of Pakistan society. “The army today owns one-third of the national assets, from gas stations to sugar mills,” he said.
But he said the most ominous aspect of politics in Pakistan was the shadowy political wing of the Inter Services Intelligence who are in plainclothes and answerable to none.
Fauzia Deeba, an activist of the World Sindhi Institute, said the question of Baluchistan was basically a human rights question where Baluchistan is one of the richest lands in the world, but its people live in abject poverty.
“I saw a family in Baluchistan which had just one bag of dates to survive the entire year,” Deeba said. "The elders were not letting children play as the kids would then feel exhausted and demand food.”
Baluchistan has one of the highest infant mortality rates anywhere in the world.
In conclusion, the A.F.B. hoped the new Obama administration would undo the wrongs done to Baluchistan by successive U.S. administrations.
“The first baby step is to send a high-level Congressional Fact Finding Mission to investigate the killing, tortures, the case of 900 missing Baluch, the loot and plunder of Baluchistan resources over the last 60 years, the forcible annexation of Baluchistan in March 1948 and the horrific nuclear tests of may 1998 that left thousands of Baluch lands destroyed,” the A.F.B. said.
In an oblique reference to the I.S.I. role in the Mumbai mayhem, the A.F.B. said, “Whether it is the Deccan Mujahideen, Kashmir Mujahideen or Afghan Mujahideen, the source of these jihads are one. Whether it is Mumbai on November 26, 2008 or Sarlath in Baluchistan on November 20, 2007 and whether it is Nawabzada Bala'ach Marri or the more than 150 people killed in the Mumbai mayhem, there is enough evidence against Pakistan's I.S.I.”
The A.F.B. said the victims of terrorism in Mumbai included Hindus, Jews, Christians and Muslims and they were all brothers and sisters of the secular Baluch people “because we are all humans.”
The A.F.B. said it considers President Asif Ali Zardari blood and bone of the Baluch nation, but the I.S.I. and army G.H.Q. would never allow him to make peace with the Baluch or India. “There was almost a coup last July when an executive order was issued to put the I.S.I. under civilian control,” Mustikhan recalled.
Meanwhile, the A.F.B. chided the British authorities for the terror trial of Nawabzada Hairbiyar Marri and Mr. Faiz Baloch and said the only sin of the two was to defend Baluch rights against the onslaught of the Pakistan army – the fourth largest in the world and one armed with nuclear weapons.
“President Zardari has publicly apologized to the Baluch people and the new government in Islamabad has clearly said the cases against Marri and Baloch were politically motivated. The continued prosecution of the two violates the principles of fair play and simply defies human logic,” the A.F.B. said.
Peter Tatchell has organized a protest rally on Monday at Woolwich Crown Court, to show the British government, police and public that people care about the fate of Marri and Baloch. Tatchell has requested all people who believe in fairplay and justice to defend Balochistan and oppose this miscarriage of justice.

BLA denies getting foreign assistance
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), on Friday refuted media reports quoting Islamabad-based state intelligence agencies that it is getting external assistance for its operations in Balochistan.
Talking to Daily Times, Bevragh Baloch, the BLA chief spokesman, said his organisation did not get any external support from the neighbouring states, as reported in the media while quoting the Islamabad-based intelligence sources.
However, the BLA would delightedly accept any kind of help offered to it by countries that sympathise with the Baloch people in their struggle for 'independence', he said.
"We have not been very lucky in terms of getting external support like Islamabad. But we welcome such support from friends of the Baloch people as we await such assistance. If Pakistan can misuse the external assistance it gets for fighting terrorism to crush the Baloch then what is wrong if we operate with the help of similar assistance," he said, adding that if the Baloch had really been getting external support, they would not have been vulnerable to attacks by the army and other security forces. 2911.08

TV interview with Baloch rights campaigner, Mehran Baluch
Baloch representative at the UN Human Rights Council
Balochistan freedom struggle - Pakistan colludes with Taliban
London – 24 November 2008
You can watch the programme here: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v15574249Ka8gKRt6
In the light of the current terrorism trial in London of Baloch human rights campaigners Hyrbyair Marri and Faiz Baluch, you may be interested to watch this online TV interview with Mehran Baluch, the Baloch representative at the UN Human Rights
Council. Mehran is the brother of Hyrbyair Marri, who is on trial in London.
The interview discusses the Baloch people’s struggle for liberation from Pakistani military occupation and oppression.
It was conducted by British human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell last year, while the Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf was still in power. The interview was recorded and first broadcast on 3 July 2007, as part of the Talking With Tatchell online TV current affairs series.
Background to the current situation in Balochistan:
Pakistan invaded and annexed the newly-independent state of Balochistan in 1948. But the Baloch people have never given up their struggle for self-rule.
After six decades of occupation and bloody repression, and despite the new democratic government in Islamabad, the Pakistan military continues to wage war against the people of Balochistan, detaining without trial thousands of Balochs and resorting to torture, detention without trial, disappearances and extra-judicial killings.
Because Britain and the United States want Pakistan as an ally in their so-called “war on terror” they armed Pakistan and have acquiesced with its suppression of the Baloch people.
Pakistan’s war against non-fundamentalist Balochistan and its moderate nationalist forces has strengthened the position of the Taliban who have exploited the situation to establish bases in the region. From these bases, they launch terror attacks against the Baloch people and seek to enforce the Talibanisation of Balochistan.
The Pakistani military colludes with the Taliban’s murderous campaign, on the grounds that it helps to crush the Baloch people and their struggle for self-government.
Many of the Taliban leaders hide out in Balochistan, from where they plan and launch their military operations to overthrow the flawed but democratically-elected government of Afghanistan.
Their campaign to usurp power in Kabul is taking place with the tacit collusion of key figures in the Pakistani military and intelligence services. Pakistani sympathisers are allowing the Taliban to use Balochistan as a base for their war against democracy and human rights.
Meanwhile, the international community is looking the other way, allowing the Baluch people to be suppressed and ignoring their right to self-determination.

Answering a question about the struggle Nawab Marri said, It is not necessary that people only should fight in mountains. They can fight in planes, streets also.
During the interview when calling him again and again Nawab, He said I dont like the title of Nawab, which is given by English (British). When asked about the agreements between english and Marri Balochs. He said he dont know much about those agreements. But my grandfather fought with english. He defeated by english army. But he did not give up. Baloch had never accepted the slavery of English. Baloch Struggle began when the english invaders entered in Balochistan during the Mehrab Khan's era. After the martyrdom of Mehrab Khan. The struggle got further momentum.
While describing a nation he said, There should be one language, one Culture, Freedom, Geography, Then the justice also will come. But these all come afterwards. First you have to have own country. In a question about the Baloch Sardari system. He said It is a patriotic system. No one can say that this system is worse then American and Punjabi's democracy.
About the Future of Sardari system he said the path Baloch are moving will change the Sardari system automatically. But there are good things about Sardari system that may remain.
In a question about elimination of Saradari system in Bhutto Era. He said that if a coummunist would talk about Public Perhaps I would understand but if a Billionaire say this then I dont think it is acceptable. Answering a question about whether Patriotic Society (Tribal system) is cruel or Capitalism. He said Tribes are backward but they are not cruel.
In a question about Brahui and Baloch, He said there is no difference between Brahui and Baloch. Brahui are the first one who came to Balochistan. But they were Baloch. There is no doubt between us and Brahui.
About the Tribal fueds Nawab Marri said. The Tribal fueds existed everywhere in the world. Refering to Tribal fueds he said this kind of feuds will go on. Fueds are also part of evolution. When asked if he believe in Evolution, and doesnt he love his own things? He said I love my own things very much but not so blindly that I remain backward from the world.
About the Globalisation he said. The world has become a country. America attacks Iraq for his national interests. Israil attacks Palestine or Tmail tigers are symbol of the Nationlism. He said we are in the evolution stage. First we have to achieve the goal as a nation. Then we have to move toward Humanisam. He said I did not understand the significance of small and big Nationalities Until today. He asked whether English is a big Nation? France, Germany, Sweden are small nations? He said Baloch is bigger nation then Punjabi. Once we get control over our resources and land. Then the whole world will run behind us.
About the development he said. English also came to Balochistan to Develop Baloch. The Schools were Built to make Babos (Clerks). The roads and infrastructure were to loot Baloch Resources. Baloch is not able to live freely. You talking about Schools.
We are fighting to come out of this cage. He furthur said that Mohajir and Punjabi brings infrastructure for their self interest. The development by Mohajir and Punjabi make us BONA( Short) not powerfull. When asked about Self determination, he said Baloch was like a body and has been cut and divided to Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. How can I accept a self determination of one piece. Jinnah was not a prophet that I should recognise his pakistan.
I feel, That I have to achieve Freedom. Then why should not I struggle for this. Answering a question about the Struggle for freedom He said. Everywhere people are fighting for freedom. Tamil and Hamas also fighting. IRA Fighting. Should they wait for any big war? Should they wait for a big earthquake to come and move small stones from there path? From my opinion it is better to fight rather then wait. Therefore we fighting. About the foreign help. he said Pakistan herself alive on American aid. We are not getting any help from outside. If anyone offer us help we will accept it happily.
Pakistan herself depends on others. If Poor Baloch take help from someone else is not a great sin. While answering a question he said, to achieve something is necessary to struggle. Therefore we have to struggle. Even religiously there is nothing wrong to struggle for your rights.
About chief Justice He said. Justice chaudary never spoke about Balochistan, I dont consider him Baloch Governer and Chief Minister are Baloch by Name but not practically. He furthur said there is extent of Nation. According to that extent they are not Baloch. Baloch Nation has to decide about this. Whether I am right or wrong?

Pakistan only needs Baloch resources not Baloch Nation
Pakistan is trying to get billions dollars from international organizations for the earthquake hit areas of Balochistan. But this aid will be used to genocide Baloch nation. Punjabi’s Pakistan bought weapons and artillery from the money, which was given to her for the relief of flood hit areas of Balochistan previously.
Pakistan only needs Baloch resources not Baloch Nation. Otherwise Pakistan wouldn’t stop the international organizations to help those thousands poor Baloch who have been displaced from there areas during military Operation and living as a refugee in jaffarabad and some areas of Sindh, without shelter and food for last 3 years.
According to international organizations reports hundreds of children died due to shortage of food and different kind of diseases, and hundreds are sufferings from the diseases like Diarrhoeal diseases and measles.
But Pakistan has stopped these organizations from helping these Balochs.
We appeal to International Organizations to come forward to help the earthquake hit areas themselves. If not the Pakistan will use the money provided by International Organizations for the relief of earthquake hit people will be used for the genocide of Baloch Naiton 04.11.08

A message from BLA (Baloch Liberation Army)
Baloch Sarmacharan support rally is a step, But we have to voice the independent of Balochistan in every city and street
Dear Balochs: A Desire and purpose of Baloch martyrs. and the struggle to get rid of the black era of Slavery, This effort of Baloch youths is a one step toward the revolutionary struggle, but one should not consider it mile stone. We would be more happy if Friends would name this rally REJECT PAKISTAN RALLY, SUPPORT FREEDOM RALLY rather than Support sarmacharan Rally. Because the Purpose of Baloch youths in militancy front is only and only freedom. There is no other option than to freedom from this agent of emperialist powers. All other ways will go toward the destruction of Baloch Nation.
Dear Balochs:
In this Dark era of Slavery Whatever Baloch Nation had tolerated under the. The occupancy of enemy is one side. What had effected us the most is selfishness, lies, self beneficence, emotional display, corruption, Tribilism, falsehood. These are like larva.(a worm which bore woods) dangerous for the existence of nation. It is sad to say that the anger against these in our groups in political front is absent.
Dear Balochs:
In the struggle of Freedom the primary purpose is the purpose to scarify is a condtion. if the situation is bloody or people think ten time before shedding even sweat. is nothing than misfortunate.
Dear Balochs:
In today’s situation the imperialist powers and their agents want to make Baloch nation a pressure group and agent like Punjabi. They don’t want that Baloch nation rise as a power. A power with a strong concept of national asset, Free from corruption and lies, and free from the self-beneficence associational, regional and tribal. Where the national concept should not be tribal. But it is strange to see here every one thinks his tribe as a nation. Eg. Raisani Qaumai Ithead, Shahwani Qaumi Ithead, Sarpara Qaumi Ithead, Qambarani Qaumi ithead. If the tribe is a nation then what is notion of Baloch nation in your minds?
Dear Balochs:
Today Baloch enemies want the Baloch nation as uneatable (kitchri) a mixture of dhall and rice. Which is neather worth to eat nor to spit, like Palestine’s in Palestine, Afghan in Afghanistan, and Africans in Africa. We are making the work of our enemy easy by lieing, stubbornness, selfishness, and lacking the emotion of sacrifice lacking the concept of nation and national asset. If we want Freedom from occupant state of Pakistan, Then from today we have to strengthen the concept of Naitonal asset in the minds of Baloch nation. by getting rid from Pakistan we have to save our selves from the disease of stubbornness, selfishness, regionalism and tribalism, personalism also which are dangerous for national existence. We have to voice freedom only freedom in every house, street, and city.
Dear Balochs:
The participants in struggle of Freedom, we have to start working with the groups who are working for freedom and we have to work hard to strengthen the concept. When Baloch nation take authority on national assets and national decision. Then there should be justice, equality in the land of Baloch Nation and it should be free from personel, associational, regional and tribal benefits. And strong emotion of sacrificing everything for the land of Baloch nation and national benefits.
Dear Balochs:
We hope that the circle of your struggle will be only and only freedom, and to sacrifice everything in the way of freedom. With a strong determinations and with emotion for sacrifice along with Baloch nation we have to voice the Freedom from occupant state of Pakistan. 03.11.08

A Big rally was organized by BSO in solidarity with Baloch freedom fighters
A Big rally was organized by BSO (Baloch Students Organization) in solidarity with Baloch freedom fighters. The rally procession begins from Degree College Sariab and ended at Science College junction. Up to 10 thousand people participated in the rally
The participants chanted “BLA, “BLF, “BRA, “We want freedom, We want freedom” “The grave of Punjabis, is Balochistan, Balochistan!” “Long live Balochistan!” and other patriotic slogans.
Participants were carrying the flags of BLA, BLF and BRP, and pictures of Baloch martyrs.
On the sidelines of the rally some 12 hundred Pakistani police and anti-terrorist personnel were present, they were carrying tear-gas shells and their guns were loaded with live bullets, with 2 armored cars, 20 trucks and 2 prisoner trucks. Apart from police there were Pakistani intelligence agents, in civil dress (disguised), present inside the rally, to cause anarchy among the rally participants. But the agents failed.
The Pakistani police, there blocked all the roads going towards Science College intersection and Pakistanis erected big curtains to block public from viewing the rally.
It is worth noting that 10 thousand people (though very few) participated in the rally because the University of Balochistan and other colleges were closed due to infighting between Baloch and Pashtun students, and Pakistanis efforts to sabotage the rally before it takes place that’s why many of the would-be participants couldn’t attend the rally. 03.11.08 |

Balochistan Earthquake Kills 150 People Near Quetta

London terror trial – Defendants framed
UK colludes with Musharraf's agents
London UK – 27 October 2008
Two London-based human rights campaigners will stand trial on terrorism charges, starting next Monday 3 November at Woolwich Crown Court , before Mr Justice Henriques.
"This trial will expose high level collusion between the British government and the agents of the former Pakistani dictator, Pervez Musharraf ," according to human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell , who is a personal friend and political ally of the two defendants.
"These men were framed by the Musharraf regime, to silence their highly effective campaigning against Pakistani human rights abuses in Balochistan," added Mr Tatchell.
"The British government was blackmailed into arresting them. Musharraf's agents issued an ultimatum to the UK authorities: arrest these men or we will halt all cooperation in the war on terror. The Labour government caved in to these demands from Musharraf's dictatorship.
It decided these men were expendable for the so-called greater good of anti-terrorist cooperation with the Pakistani regime," said Mr Tatchell.
The defendants are Hyrbyair Marri and Faiz Baluch. They are accused of preparing acts of terrorism abroad – charges they strenuously deny.
Both men have been law-abiding citizens. They fled to Britain to escape persecution by the military coup leader and tyrant, General Pervez Musharraf .
Mr Baluch is represented by Jim Nichol of Taylor Nichol solicitors (020 7272 8336) and Mr Marri is represented by Gareth Peirce of Birnberg Peirce solicitors (020 7911 0166).
Mr Marri is a former MP and government minister in the regional assembly of Balochistan – a previously independent state, which was invaded and annexed by Pakistan in 1948, and which has ever since been under Pakistani military occupation .
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the Asian Human Rights Commission have documented and condemned severe and widespread human rights abuses by the Pakistani armed forces in Balochistan – abuses that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity , including the indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas and the systemic use of torture.
Mr Marri's father, Nawab Khair Baksh Marri , a renowned Baloch national leader, attended Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, along with other world dignitaries, as a guest of the British government.
His uncle is Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, the UN Special Representative to Sudan and the former Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, and his wife is the great grand daughter of the first Prime Minister of Iraq (1920-1922), Abdul Rahman al Gillani.
Mr Marri and Mr Baluch, were arrested by police in London last December. Mr Marri spent four months in Belmarsh high security prison, and Mr Baluch eight months.
"The police and security agencies in the UK have pursued these terror charges based on evidence provided to them by Musharraf's dictatorship – a dictatorship that the arrested men campaigned against," said Mr Tatchell.
"Our government has ignored the fact that Musharraf's henchmen in the Pakistani intelligence agency, the ISI, are notorious for framing political opponents, especially Baloch nationalists.
"Marri and Baluch have been set up by Musharraf's agents because of their highly effective exposure of Pakistan's war crimes and crimes against humanity in annexed Balochistan.
"This belief has been reinforced by the acting Interior Minister of the new democratic government of Pakistan , Rehman Malik. He recently announced that terror charges against Mr Marri in Pakistan have been dropped; stating that the case against him had been politically motivated. This discredits the whole basis on which Marri and Baluch have been charged in London.
"Marri's and Baluch's arrest came just a few months after Musharraf demanded that the British government arrest Baloch activists in London. In exchange, Musharraf offered to hand over Rashid Rauf , implying that action against the Baloch activists was a precondition for surrendering Rauf to the UK. Rauf is wanted in this country in connection with the 2006 Islamist terror plot involving liquid explosives on trans-Atlantic airliners, which resulted in the conviction of three men in London in September. He is also sought in connection with a murder in the UK.
"The arrest in London of Marri and Baluch took place two weeks after Pakistani government agents assassinated Marri's brother, Balach Marri , a prominent Baloch nationalist leader.
"Prior to Marri's arrest, Musharraf's regime made repeated representations to the UK government that he was wanted on terrorism charges in Pakistan - charges that have now been dropped by the Pakistani authorities.
"Soon after Musharraf met Gordon Brown at Downing Street in January this year, he held a press conference for Pakistani journalists where he allegedly denounced Marri as a terrorist and praised the British government and police for cooperating with his regime.
"Claims of connivance are credible. For nine years, the UK's Labour government supported Musharraf's dictatorship politically, economically and militarily, despite him having overthrown Pakistan's democratically-elected government in 1999. Labour even sold him the military equipment that his army uses to kill innocent Baloch people .
"Marri is an unlikely terrorist. He is a former Balochistan MP (1997-2002), and was the Minster for Construction and Works in the provincial assembly in 1997-1998. He fled to Britain in 2000, fearing arrest, torture and possible assassination by Musharraf's men.
"One of his brothers is Mehran Baluch. He is the Baloch Representative to the UN Human Rights Council. He was the subject of an attempted extradition plot last year by Musharraf's regime, on trumped up charges.
"The arrest of Marri - together with the murder of one brother and the attempt to frame another brother - looks like a systematic attempt to target his family and crush three leading voices of Baloch dissent.
"A former British Protectorate, Balochistan secured its independence in 1947, alongside India and Pakistan, but was invaded and forcibly annexed by Pakistan in 1948. The Baloch people did not vote for incorporation. They were never given a choice. Ever since, Balochistan has been under military occupation by Islamabad. Baloch demands for a referendum on self-rule have been rejected. Democratically elected Baloch leaders who have refused to kow-tow to Pakistan's subjugation have been arrested, jailed and murdered
"The Asian Human Rights Commission reports that Pakistani army raids have resulted in 3,000 Baloch people dead, 200,000 displaced and 4,000 arrested. Thousands more have simply disappeared," said Mr Tatchell.

Parliamentary politics waste of time: Brahmdagh Bugti
Parliamentary politics and dialogue were a waste of time, BBC Urdu quoted Baloch Republican Party (BRP) chief Brahamdagh Bugti as saying on Saturday. Bugti also appealed to the Baloch people to support “the resistant groups in some way or the other” to achieve success in the ongoing struggle for Balochistan.
In a telephone address to the BRP’s first council session in Quetta, Bugti said he was against holding talks with the government but if any Baloch leader wanted to hold talks, he must clarify his position. He said he could not forget the sacrifices made by his grandfather late Nawab Akbar Bugti.
He said it was not necessary “to go and fight on the mountains”, adding that it could also be done on a political level. Earlier, the BRP’s council session elected Bugti as the chairman, Dr Basheer Azeem as the general secretary and Jaleel Reeki as the information secretary of the party. daily times monitor 12.10.08
