Baloch
civil society protests against Hyrbyair’s arrest in Britain
* BSO says arrests were made without
considering the ground realities in Balochistan
By Malik Siraj Akbar
QUETTA: The Baloch civil society responded angrily on Wednesday to
a Westminster Magistrates’ Court in the UK charging two Baloch
leaders with cases of inciting terrorism.
They alleged “the British government has resorted to a colonial
approach in suppressing the just voice of the Baloch people for
their genuine demands”.
Two separate and widely attended protest rallies were taken out by
Baloch students and members of the Marri tribe in front of Quetta
Press Club in which protesters condemned the arrest of 39-year-old
Hyrbyair Marri, the son of veteran Baloch leader Nawab Khair Bux
Marri, and his accomplice Faiz Baloch.
According to a Baloch website, Hyrbyair Marri was detained by
British authorities on December 3 under the Terrorism Act, 2000,
from his residence in Ealing, London. He was subsequently
transferred to the Paddington Green police station.
Faiz Baloch of the Balochistan Rights Movement was simultaneously
picked up from Hyrbyair’s residence in Wembley and taken to an
undisclosed location.
Carrying posters and placards saying “Down with UK”, students
and members of the Baloch Students Organisation (BSO) said the
Baloch were outraged by the arrest of their leaders in the UK.
Inconsiderate arrests: The arrests and registration of cases had
been made without considering the ground realities in Balochistan,
they said.
“The Baloch people are currently under a military operation
where their democratic leaders are being killed and imprisoned.
The remaining leaders are compelled to take shelter outside the
country to continue their just struggle,” said BSO Quetta
President Shahzib Baloch. “But the UK government has acted with
a colonial approach and cooperated with a country that is indulged
in killing our leaders,” he added.
Shahzib Baloch said the people of Balochistan did not approve of
the alleged usurpation of their resources by the government of
Pakistan. “The Baloch are a separate nation by every definition
of the word,” he said, adding “we are not fighting for
provincial autonomy but for the right of self-ownership and
self-determination. The international community should help us
instead of collaborating with the forces that are crushing us from
all sides.”
Another protest rally was taken out by the Anjuman Ittehad-e-Marri,
a non-political organisation, which said the UK government had
double standards and was acting contrary to the Geneva
Conventions.
“Islamabad has gathered a remarkable number of sophisticated
weapons to pretend to be fighting against Islamic terrorists. But
these weapons are in fact being used to kill the innocent
Baloch,” said a leader of the Ittehad, warning that if the
Baloch leaders were not released immediately, anti-UK sentiments
would soar considerably among the Baloch.
Another brother of Hyrbyair Marri, Balaach Marri, was killed last
month with the actual location of his death still a mystery. Their
father, Khair Bux Marri, was incarcerated for 18 months for his
alleged involvement in the killing of a high court judge, Justice
Nawaz Marri.
