Balochistan; Chinese convoy attack, 36 dead, 30 injured

A bomb blast that hit a convoy of Chinese nationals and Pakistani security forces on Thursday, killing at least 36 Pakistanis including at least 10 police men and intelligence personnel, could be a suicide attack, police said.

The convoy was passing though the main bazaar in Hub, a town in Balochistan province near the port city of Karachi, when a moving car blew up next to a police vehicle, officials said.

Sources said 36 people were killed, including seven policemen and several intelligence personnel and about 30 other were wounded, some critically. But most of the civilians killed and injured were due to indiscriminate firing by the police and FC personnel on civilian population after the explosion.

A local told, the police and other law enforcement personnel escorting the Chinese engineer’s convoy started indiscriminate automatic fire on civilians, which continued for 20 minutes killing dozens and injuring scores of others.

The Chinese citizens worked at a lead extraction plant in Dudhar in Balochistan and were temporarily leaving the area for Karachi due to security concerns, police said.

Some officials suggested the bomb was remote-controlled. But Thaib and Nawaz, whose men also were guarding the minibus carrying some 10 Chinese technicians and engineers, said it was a suicide attack.

The Hub attack follows the July 8 slaying of three Chinese men in a rickshaw workshop in Peshawar, which drew a protests from Beijing, a key ally of Pakistan, and a pledge from Islamabad to protect some 2,000 to 3,000 Chinese nationals in Pakistan.

Officials have suggested the Peshawar attack was linked to the then-ongoing army operation against Islamabad's Red Mosque. Troops moved in after Islamic radicals from the mosque kidnapped several Chinese women they accused of being prostitutes.

However, ethnic Baloch insurgents have been blamed for at least two past attacks on Chinese nationals.

Baloch insurgents have previously also claimed responsibility for attacks on Chinese engineers involved in construction of the controversial mega projects including the deepwater port in Gwadar and other projects resulting in depravation and plunder of Baloch resources in this resource-rich but impoverished Baloch Nation exploitation. 19.7.07
