Subject: Right to the people of Balochistan

Pakistan has championed the cause of Kashmiri self-determination. Does the Council believe that Pakistan needs to give the same right to the people of Balochistan and the tribal regions of Pakistan instead of indulging in the use of armed force to suppress its own people?

Subject: Election of the President of Pakistan

General Pervez Musharraf has been elected as the President of Pakistan. Does the Council consider his victory legitimate since the entire opposition had boycotted the elections? Does the Council propose to express its misgivings regarding the manipulation of the democratic process by General Musharraf?

Subject: Conflict in Pakistan's tribal belt

There is continuing conflict in Pakistan’s tribal belt. Does the Council propose to advise the Government of Pakistan not to use excessive force involving fighter jets and helicopter gun ships against its own people?

Does the Council propose to send a delegation to help the Government of Pakistan and the tribal leadership to achieve a negotiated settlement?

European Parliament, Brussels, Belgium 10th October 2007 – Members of the European Parliament met to discuss the emerging issue of Democracy and Judiciary in South Asia.

Members of the European Parliament organized a special brain storming session on "Justice and Rule of Law: Imperatives for Sustain Development" in the European Parliament, Brussels aiming to resolve the democratic and judicial problems in the South Asian region. This session was attended by 14 MEPs from different political parties and one vice-president.

The session discussed several aspects in the South Asia Region and mentioned several countries which are not democratic and whose judicial mechanism has collapsed, naming few were Pakistan, Bhutan and Bangladesh. MEPs urged the leaders of these countries to vest more time in repairing and uniting the two most important mechanisms to run a prosperous and peaceful country and not engage in inter-bloc rivalry.

Pakistan was heavily criticized for its role in Balochistan, where several innocent women and children are being killed by Pakistan Punjabi army, just to get oil. And Pakistan Administered Kashmir on the abduction of youth's and political activists, and no police reports are allowed to be filed.

India was applauded by all the MEPs for being the only Democratic and Law abiding country in the region and urged India to unite and teach the others countries in the same bloc to develop a sustain democratic and law abiding judicial system in their country. India should preach these two important mechanisms to its neighbors.

During this meeting the MEPs proposed the establishment of a joint EP forum "South Asia Peace Forum" an initiative by the Members of the European Parliament. Which will be monitoring the activities,organizing briefing session and study tours in the coming month. Mr. Marek Czarnecki along with two other MEPs agree to prepare a Dossier on the "Democratic Situation in South Asia".
