HRCP
completes Balochistan fact-finding mission
A fact-finding mission of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP)
visited Sui and Dera Bugti areas on Monday to assess the human rights
situation.
Led by its chairperson Asma Jehangir, the HRCP delegation met the local
people, personnel and senior officials of the law-enforcement agencies
and officials of the local administration in Sui and Dera Bugti.
The delegation comprised some opposition leaders and media persons. Asma
Jehangir would soon announce the details of the visit. Meanwhile, the
central secretary-general of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), Agha Shahid
Bugti, through a press statement, hailed the visit, observing that it
would help the people of the country and the world know the factual
situation.
Agha Shahid Bugti severely criticised those who were supporting the
"military operation" in Balochistan for their vested interests.
Our Peshawar correspondent adds: Awami National Party chief Asfandyar
Wali has condemned Saturday’s attack on convoy of the Human Rights
Commission near Dera Bugti. In a statement issued here on Monday, the
ANP leader said indiscriminate firing on the HRCP convey headed by its
chairperson Asma Jehangir showed that the administration wanted to hide
the factual situation in the restive areas of Balochistan.
He alleged that the administration wanted to hide the maltreatment being
meted out to the Baloch in the ongoing "military operation" and that was
why the people intending to get first-hand information were pressured
through such tactics.
He said the ANP was a peaceful and democratic political party that
condemned any sort of military action against civilians. This type of
military operations created hatred among the people, he added. Asfandyar
demanded the government to immediately initiate an inquiry into the
incident and award punishment to the culprits. He also demanded halt to
the Army action.11.1.06 |
